Nail holes, anchor damage, doorknob strikes, dents from moving day. Small holes get filled, sanded flat, and primed so the paint does not flash at the repair.
Drywall Patches for Larger Holes
When the damage is bigger than a fist, a mesh sticker will not carry it. We cut back to sound board, set backing, fasten a new piece of drywall with drywall screws, and tape the seams.

Every wall takes a hit eventually. A doorknob goes through it, moving day leaves a gouge, a settling crack creeps out of a corner, or a ceiling stain shows up after a roof leak. Most homeowners start at the hardware store: a drywall patch kit, a tub of spackle, a putty knife, and a free Saturday. The hole gets filled. The wall still shows the repair every time light rakes across it, because filling a hole and making a repair disappear are two different jobs.

Is This Worth a Pro, or a Saturday Project?
Honest answer: some drywall damage is a homeowner job, and a patch kit handles it. Here is when it stops being one.
- You already tried repairing drywall yourself. If the spackle shrank back, or the patch shows through the paint every time light rakes across the wall, the fix is not another thin coat, it is cutting the damage out and starting from sound board.
- The same crack keeps coming back after you fill it. That usually means the joint tape underneath has let go, and the repair is retaping the seam, not more spackle.
- The hole is bigger than your fist, or it is in a ceiling. Both need backing, a real drywall patch, and overhead finishing skill, not a mesh sticker from the hardware aisle.
- The wall is soft, bubbled, or stained. Moisture is involved, and the drywall paper is telling you to find out where it came from before anyone paints over it.
- You have a list. One doorknob hole is no big deal. Ten dings, two cracks, and a ceiling stain is a visit from us, priced as one job.
If it really is one clean nail hole and a small amount of spackle will fill it, save the call. For everything else, looking at it costs you nothing.
Patching Drywall, by Patch Size
The repair method follows the size of the damage. This is how we decide what your wall needs, and what each fix involves.
Small holes: fill and sand
Nail pops, screw holes, anchor holes: anything under about half an inch across. A small amount of spackle or lightweight joint compound pressed in with a putty knife and spread thin from the center out, sanded flat with fine grit once dry, then primed. Skip the primer and the paint flashes at every fill.
Medium holes: mesh drywall patch
From half an inch up to about three inches, mud alone will not hold, so a self-adhesive mesh drywall patch goes sticky side to the wall. We attach it, then spread joint compound in thin coats with a flexible joint knife, each coat feathered wider than the last, so the edges vanish into the existing drywall around them.
Larger holes: a new piece of drywall
Past three inches, patches stop and carpentry starts. The damage gets squared off into a clean rectangular opening with a drywall saw, measured with a tape measure, and backed with wood strips, because a large patch needs backing to sit on, with the new board overlapping sound material by an inch or two. A new piece of drywall gets fastened to the backing with drywall screws, then paper tape over the seams, mud, sand, repeat until the surface runs flat.
Water-stained board
Stains get a moisture check before anything else. Firm board gets a stain-blocking primer and a clean refinish. Soft, swollen, or moldy board comes out and gets replaced. We never seal a stain over a live leak.
Nail and screw pops
A popped nail head leaves a visible bulge in the wall that shows through paint. Popped fasteners get driven back or replaced, filled, and finished flush, and if the fastener popped because the framing moved, we set fresh drywall screws nearby so the fix holds.

Walk the damage with you
The craftsman looks at every wall and ceiling on your list, checks each damaged area for moisture so we are not patching over a live problem, and writes up one price for the whole visit.

Cut back to sound board
Damaged drywall gets squared off with a utility knife or drywall saw to solid material, frayed edges trimmed, and backing goes in behind the opening, so the patch is anchored to something instead of floating in the hole.

Patch, tape, and apply joint compound
New board or a mesh patch goes on, seams get drywall tape, and joint compound goes on in thin coats with a flexible joint knife, because several thin layers always finish smoother than one thick one. The first coat fills, the second coat feathers wider, and each coat gets thirty to sixty minutes of drying before the next, longer in Florida humidity. Rushing that wait is why cheap patches telegraph through paint.

Sand smooth and match the texture
A sanding sponge or sanding block with fine grit paper takes down the high spots, worked in a crisscross pattern from the center of the patch outward until the wall shows a flat finish. The crew wears a dust mask for this stage, you just close the door. Then knockdown, orange peel, or smooth finish gets blended past the edges of the repair so there is no hard line where new meets old.

Prime, paint, and clean up
A full coat of primer goes over the entire patch, because joint compound drinks paint differently than the drywall around it, and unprimed patches flash through the finish. We paint to match if you want us to, or leave it ready for your painter. Sanding dust gets contained and cleaned up, and you walk the work before we leave.

Most Florida homes wear knockdown or orange peel texture, and both are unforgiving to a sloppy patch: get the spray pattern wrong and the repair shows from across the room. Our craftsmen match texture daily, so the blend is part of the job, not an upsell.
Humidity and summer storms are hard on drywall too. Rainy season roof leaks and AC condensation leave the ceiling stains we get called about most from June through October, and the same humidity stretches the drying time between coats of mud, which is why a rushed patch cracks. If the stain is from an active leak, fix the leak first; then we repair what the water ruined, and the repair holds.

How many repairs, and the repair size
A single patch and a houseful of dings carry different labor, but batching everything into one visit is the cheapest way to buy this work. Setup, materials, and drying time get shared across every repair.
Wall or ceiling
Overhead work is slower, needs staging, and demands more finishing skill, so ceiling repairs price above the same damage on a wall. When a schedule is tight, quick-set mud shortens the drying window between coats, and we use it where it makes sense.
The texture on your walls
Smooth finish is the hardest to make invisible because there is no pattern to hide in. Knockdown and orange peel blend more forgivingly but need the right spray technique.
Whether we paint
Paint-ready costs less than painted-to-match. If the wall color has faded and the desired effect is a wall that looks untouched, painting corner to corner instead of spot-touching is sometimes the honest recommendation, and we will say so.

Can I fix drywall myself with a patch kit?
For one clean nail hole, sure. The tools needed are a patch kit, spackle, a putty knife, and a sanding pad, and an hour will get it done. The jobs that end up with us are the bigger ones, where the patch needs backing, drywall tape, the right tools, and texture work to disappear. If your first try still shows, we can cut it out and do it right.
How big of a hole can you patch in drywall?
Any size. Small drywall holes get filled and sanded, medium ones get a mesh drywall patch and joint compound, and larger holes get a new piece of drywall screwed to backing. Past a certain point patching stops making sense and we replace the full sheet, and we will tell you honestly which side of that line your wall is on.
Can ceiling drywall be repaired?
